The event was held just prior to the 63rd anniversaries of the
atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to help remind us
that nuclear explosions kill. After the nuclear explosions over
Japan, about 280,000 people died the first year. Today rice
grown near the epicenter in Nagasaki remains only 50% productive
after over 60 years.
The
hydrogen bombs developed into this 21st Century are at least
100 times more powerful than the atomic bombs detonated in 1945.
The loss of life and ecological danger would be astronomical
for the entire planet. Estimates are that a present day nuclear
bomb dropped anywhere on the earth would knock out electricity
over the entire globe. Further, the dense cloud from post-explosion
radiation could block the sun causing a nuclear winter to descend
on the earth with sub-zero temperatures in many areas. Much
of life would not survive this experience.
The
24 hour Peace Vigil at the Jizo Peace Center was held in conjunction
with the Great Vow Zen Monastery in Clatskanie, Oregon where
a 24 hour Peace Vigil has been held each year at this time since
2005.
