Essay on Compassion

Before I was given the opportunity to participate in a food and clothes drive in the eleventh grade, I had a general idea of what compassion was; feeling sympathy for people in need. Since I come from a family that does not have many luxuries and barely has enough to get by, I feel sad for people who have less than me because I cannot picture myself in their situations. Before I engaged in community service activities, I would only feel sympathy for people. Although I wanted to help them, especially the homeless families in my community, I didn’t know how to. Fortunately, I was able to join a local church group that is dedicated to helping the homeless by hosting monthly food and clothes drives around my neighborhood and in Downtown L.A. This local organization has helped me make a difference in my community by doing something that I like; giving back to the less fortunate.

Giving back to the community and helping the less fortunate is an experience like no other. When I look at the smiles of the people I am helping, I can see the gratefulness that these people feel knowing that there are people in society who have not forgotten about them. Although I might not have much, I am happy to know that I can still make a difference in other people’s lives. Likewise, I recommend every person to help give back to their community because the outcomes are definitely rewarding. I cannot stress how awesome it feels to be helping someone else. The people that I help not only see me as a person but they see me as their hero who helps them live and get by. Also, by helping out in the community, many people will enjoy living a peaceful life by appreciating the things they have. Once they see the harsh living conditions that other people endure, they will be grateful for what they have.

As an active participant in my community, I have come to understand that compassion is more than just a feeling of sympathy for another person; it is the feeling that makes them want to do something that will help those people. If more people were do develop a compassionate mindset, more people will be out of misery. Helping other people will create clear and good conscious mind.
