Essay by

A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty." is a quote by Albert Einstein that represents how my mentality on society and the world around me works. It is not impossible for a single person to change the world. All it takes is dedication, willingness and innovation to succeed. If everyone decides to make a humble deed, this world would be a better place. Crime will be diminished and children would be more motivated to succeed in life.

Every morning as I step out of my house I look at my surroundings. I witness students deciding to go somewhere else rather than attending school. It frightens me to learn how over the years these children are getting younger and younger. The ages range from nine to fourteen, it is very unfortunate to know that these kids are desecrating valuable time. To me it is very heartbreaking to observe this situation. I feel that everyone is capable of reaching their goals, but what they need is motivation. People that are being pushed into the wrong path need to find their guardian angel, an angel that can be you or me.

I am very proud to be part of many organizations to help out those in need. I know I was put in this world to make a difference. I dedicate my time in mentoring children, helping them out in everything they need help in. I am a member of the Big Brothers and Sisters, where I work with a little girl and treat her as a sister. In addition I have volunteered in many Elementary Schools where I teach students the significance of succeeding. I am currently a peer counselor at my school; my job is to motivate my peers to attend college. It is our duty to make the future of tomorrow better than today. Just like human beings are a big concern, this Planet concerns me as well. I know that someone has to do something to stop pollution. I have beeen part of a team called "SLABT" (South Los Angeles Beautificaiton Team), where it helped me realize how important it is to keep our neighborhoods clean and non-violent. I help in beautifying the streets by cleaning and picking up trash and properly disposing of it. Thanks to SLABT I have a different perspective towards the world. I know that if we do not take care of it, soon it will be devastated by our own destruction.

Animals are also beings that need love. I am very compassionate about them just like I am with the children and the environment. It is sad to know that animals are mistreated and slaughtered for food. They endure great pains that any living organism shouldn't undergo. I am a vegetarian who cares a lot about the animal's impact on our planet, and believe that they should be protected at all costs. I try to show my compassion by informing the general public about the atrocities being committed everyday. My goal is to transform them into vegetarians and to teach them how one person can save thousands of animals in a year.

With all the turmoil in the world today, I believe it is our task to move towards a better future, not just as individuals, but as one big family working to make this, planet earth, our home, a better place in the vast universe ahead of us. As a member of the Ephebian society I have made an oath, an oath that I will carry along with strong devotion. "We will transmit this city..." is a line that I will take to actions. Every one has the ability to be compassionate. I am very grateful with God for shaping me into what I have become and hope that he continues to enlighten my life so that I can keep on giving back to this beautiful world. I have many dreams and among them is to change people's perspective towards the environment, the animals, and the children that are in need of a positive role model in their life. Just like Albert Einstein once said, we need to get out of that prison and widen our kindness to succeed in the ultimate goal and rid this world of all the evil that lurks within it.
