Compassion is a feeling of empathy toward someone who is struggling or suffering. The importance of being a compassionate person its that you are able to understand that everyone is different and might be going through hardships in life. which most of the times, their mods or attitude is reflected by it. Being able to comprehend someone's facial expressions body language can really make a difference just by checking up on them or helping out. Especially during these times, violence rates have increased within my community and so has poverty due to inflation. These are the times people need to be there for each other because not many individuals have someone they can go to for safety and comfort. Living in a low-income connumity, not many resources are available to families, causing financial struggles. Being able to contribute by simply donating and fundraising, many families are able to benefit from it. Overtime I was able to learn and show compassion towards others because of what the commumity has done for me and my loved ones. My parents were able to benefit from toys drives and food drives that were organized by members in my community, which was immensely helpful when it was most needed. Growing up and seeing how my community was doing selfless acts to assist people in need, inspired me to volunteer and get involved in activities to collect donations and fundraise. A volunteer experience that I hold close to my heart was when I participated in a Christmas Toy Drive at the East Los Angeles Library. I was part of the ROTC program at Garfield High School, where students annually participated in events hosted by the commumity to give back to families. I was able to donate and help pass out toys to children that were in line to receive them and visit Santa. Being able to participate in such a wholesome event brought me comfort because when I saw parents with their children in line, I saw my mom and me. When December rolled around, King Taco would do their annual Christmas Toy Drive and would give an abundance of gifts out to families in need. Considering that my family lived in a household with 10 individuals, we weren't financially stable, and my parents weren't able to provide me with basic needs. Although, I grew up desiring privacy and basic needs such as clothes and hygiene products, I always tried to help out others as much as I can by simply offering to buy food, or making a small donation. Showing compassion to others is important in our society since you are able to connect with them in a personal level and develop a better understanding that everyone goes through things in life and handles them differently, and by asking them how they are, can change their life.
