Compassion is more than feeling pity for others misfortunes. It is the ability to understand the adversities the world or individuals are going through, and willing to make an impact to relieve that adversity. In the society humans live in, no matter the country, state, city, village, or town, our world is lacking compassion. Most human beings in our world lack the compassion that would be able to help society become better. We as a society have seen what the lack of compassion leads to. Greed, entitlement, suffering, war, increasing conflicts, broken relationships, and could even lead to the isolation of society. Without compassion, there will be no one to turn to in need of woeful times, and no one to turn to when individuals need help and support. This does not mean compassion does not exist, but it is scarce. With the support, care, and familiarity that comes from compassion, individuals are able to turn to one another, and build strong relationships that can last a lifetime. Compassion can build strong and close communities.
My Mother was the first person who taught me what compassion truly is. Doing something for someone without expecting anything in return. Due to such a valuable lesson, I took it upon myself to begin helping people as best as I could, whenever needed, varying from family, friends, or helping strangers when they needed it. There is a moment in my life that I will never forget, because it helped my Mother, my role model. My Mother had gone down with a virus known as the Norwalk virus. She had no energy to care for her three daughters including myself, so I took it upon myself to take care of them in her place, while she isolated herself in her room to prevent the spread of her sickness. I remember feeling empathy for her, for I had gone through the same sickness just a few days before. I understood how drained she must have felt, constantly having to produce emesis. It was not the first time I had to take care of my siblings on my own before, so I knew what to do. I made sure to cook them breakfast, watch my youngest sister who happens to be a toddler, and made sure to give each of them attention so they would not have to be dependent on my Mother in her time of sickness. I also made sure to check up on my Mother and gave her easy foods to eat, such as plain toast, so as to not irritate her stomach and trigger more emesis.
Nevertheless, I am not sharing this experience to flaunt how compassionate I am, but to encourage others to take a step into developing compassion, so they may help other people in need. Whether the action be big or small, the impact it creates, can allow people to come together. For compassion can bring together people, countries, nations, and the world. Bring it upon yourself to be compassionate.
